Mutable Signs
It’s often said that mutable signs are the adaptable, flexible signs of the zodiac.
Mutable signs are Gemini (Air), Virgo (Earth), Sagittarius (Fire), Pisces (Water).
Gemini is ruled by Mercury, Virgo is ruled by Mercury, Sagittarius is ruled by Jupiter, Pisces is ruled by Jupiter.
The mutable signs are more comfortable with change than most other people. Because they’re so accepting of change, they often get asked to go with the flow or be flexible in situations where others resist or rebel.
Why, Where and How the Mutable Signs Work
You often hear astrologers talking about the mutable signs, but what does it mean? The mutable signs are the ones that end each season. They are changeable and adaptable, and they’re in this elemental mode of shifting things, wrapping things up, closing chapters.
What’s interesting is that they want to wrap things up because they’re restless. They can be seen as an unstable element because they’re not happy unless they’re constantly changing things or moving on to a new project; this is also where elements like Virgo and Pisces get their reputation for being hard to pin down or understand.
The mutables have lots of different projects going on at once, which can drive you crazy if you like consistency! But with their adaptability comes the ability to go with the flow and just move on easily when something doesn’t work out.
Gemini (May 21-June 20)
Gemini is the zodiac’s social butterfly, and you’re forever seeking out new people to chat with. We’re not sure if it’s because you’re just that friendly or if your sign has an addictive quality to conversation (hi, Mercury), but you can never get enough of chatting. You love to search for new experiences and take in all of life’s little details—and then share them with anyone who will listen…they make excellent wingmen!
Virgo (August 23-September 22)
Virgo is a mutable earth sign ruled by Mercury. Mutable signs are flexible, adaptable and versatile. They’re good with their hands and have the ability to multitask well. Virgo is analytical, has a critical mind, and likes to solve problems logically. Virgos like to help others and are often typecast as “the helper.”

Sagittarius people are spiritual, adventurous, philosophical and positive. They love travel and adventure and freedom. They dislike staying in one place for too long. Sagittarius people like to be outdoors—they love the mountains, hiking, forests, beaches and the outdoors in general. They can be good at jobs in publishing, teaching, travel or athletics.
Pisces (February 18-March 19)
Pisces are the most adaptable of all three mutatable signs. They are also highly intuitive and compassionate, and often find themselves using their gifts to help others in some way or another. Pisces can see many different angles of a situation, but they tend to be very indecisive because they cannot choose just one of them. Pisces are extremely imaginative and creative, sometimes living in their own fantasy worlds inside their heads.
Pisces is ruled by Neptune, which is associated with dreams, visions, and idealism. Pisceans live in an abstract world full of art and beauty that is not always visible to others. Despite the fact that they have sometimes have trouble expressing themselves in words (because the world inside their heads is so much more vivid!), people who know you well understand what you’re trying to get across easily enough.

Mutable signs are the least stable of the four modalities. They are very flexible and adaptable, and can easily see the other side of an issue or change their minds when presented with new information.
